About the Brand

Upcycled by Matilda Flow is an upcycled art brand that transforms denim and other discarded fabrics into functional and designer flow through patchwork design and tie-dye techniques. Each piece is made by artisans at the Matilda Flow Inclusion Foundation in Ghana.

History

The Upcycled by Matilda Flow brand is a collaboration between the Matilda Flow Inclusion Foundation in Ghana and Make Fashion Clean (MFC Tie-Dye Inc.), a 501c3 non-profit organization based in the United States. Together, we have operated an upcycling partnership since 2017.

The brand was co-created through a grant from Make Fashion Clean to support the Foundation creating an e-commerce website that could reach customers globally, ship directly from Ghana, and allow for proceeds from sales to go directly to the Foundation without an intermediary partner. The grant is also supporting the streamlining of inventory management and the hiring of a social media manager for the Foundation. This work aligns with Make Fashion Clean’s long-term vision of dissolving MFC Tie-Dye Inc. at the end of 2027 or during 2028 and transitioning full governance and management of the upcycling partnership to the local team in Ghana.

Proceeds from the sale of Upcycled by Matilda Flow products, launching in September 2026, will sustain and grow the Foundation's programs, which have an annual budget of $20,000 to $30,000 USD. While operations are currently subsidized through grants from MFC Tie-Dye Inc. and will be supported through 2032 by the Make Fashion Clean Impact Fund, our goal is to scale this brand sustainably so that product sales can fund 100% or more of the Foundation’s budget after 2032.

The Upcycled by Matilda Flow brand is managed jointly by the dedicated team at the Matilda Flow Inclusion Foundation and a team of part-time volunteers from Make Fashion Clean. As sales grow and the brand is able to support additional paid sales and marketing infrastructure, management will transition fully to the Foundation’s team, with the goal of achieving this by the end of 2027.
